迈克·弗莱利1958年7月16日出生于芝加哥，Michael Flatley的雙親都來自愛爾蘭。四歲時曾獲愛爾蘭舞冠軍的祖母教他跳舞，不過並不是認真的。一直到11歲時，他母親（也是愛爾蘭舞冠軍）才開始帶他去學舞。當時，老師告訴他11歲才學舞已經太遲了，不過他還是不為所動，因為他心目中早已崇拜愛爾蘭舞蹈大師Kevin Massey，並深深受他影響。沒想到這位當初被老師認為學舞已經太遲的小孩，竟然在他17歲（1975年）時就拿到世界愛爾蘭舞蹈冠軍，也創下第一個非歐洲人拿下冠軍的記錄。日後再拿遍13個國家（包括美國）的愛爾蘭舞蹈冠軍，並且獲得前雷根總統親自頒US National Heritage Fellowship的最年輕得獎者。這項殊榮是給予美國最偉大的藝術表演者。在1991年，美國國家地理協會也宣佈Michael Flatley為「人間國寶」（Living Treasure）。
